For this assignment, I was asked to redesign a movie poster using my own original illustration and layout choices. I chose Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette because of its colourful, modern take on historical imagery, which matched the playful, stylized direction I wanted to explore.
I created a hand-drawn illustration of an extravagant pink cake topped with a gold crown, referencing the film’s themes of excess, luxury, and the iconic phrase “Let them eat cake.” I used bright, candy-like colours—mainly pink and yellow—against a soft blue patterned background to keep the poster fun, feminine, and visually bold.
For typography, I mimicked a retro pop-art style with angled text and clean, simple lettering. I placed “Let them eat cake” across the middle of the poster to balance the composition and tie the visuals to the film’s cultural references.
My goal was to blend historical elements with modern graphic design, just like the tone of the movie itself. The final poster combines illustration, colour, and layout to capture the playful extravagance and youthful energy that defines Marie Antoinette.
